The Remarkable Edible Garden!
Flowers have been adding glamor and romance to cultures around the world for centuries. Their exquisite form, fragrance, and flavor have been used by gourmets in garnishes, stuffing, jams and jellies, butters, cheese spreads, pancakes and crepes, beverages, salads, marinades, and dressings. They have delighted the senses as elegant and eco-friendly bouquets of love and exquisite beauty.
Shall we take a walk in the garden? Sml. Edible flowers are best planted in outdoor pots, raised beds, or in a garden removed from sprays or drainage to prevent chemical drift. Enrich the soil with compost, mulch, manure, or kelp and test pH to ensure proper balance. A soaker hose is recommended for watering as overhead sprays can leave wet spots that encourage disease.
Now for the fun! Mix and mingle your flowers with other garden members, your vegetables, herbs, and berries. They actually do quite well together and protect against harmful insects that get quite confused by the unexpected mix. Lady beetles and praying mantis are also good “house guests” for controlling bad bugs.
When harvesting, pick flowers in the cool of the day, wrap in moist paper towel and place in seal-tight bags in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. Only use the petals of fully opened blooms that are fresh and not fading. Remove pistils and stamen as pollen can be an irritant to allergy sufferers. Also remove the area at base of petal which can detract from flavor. Most flowering herbs have edible blooms but you will want to check a good reference source to be certain of which do.
Some of the more popular plants consumed are: Day Lilies, Hibiscus, Honeysuckle, Johnny Jump up, Lilac, Marigold, Nasturtium, Pansy, Passion flower, Pineapple Sage, Scented Geraniums, Roses, Sunflowers, Squash, Tulips, Violet, Hollyhock, English Daisy, Dianthus, Dandelion, Bachelor’s Button and Apple blossoms. Do walk gently amongst the beauties. If you’re quiet you just might hear them whisper as they stand on the runway in their elegant couture.

Bored With Basic Bonsai? Try These Advanced Bonsai Styles
Once you have mastered the basic bonsai styles such as the formal upright style of chokkan, the informal upright style of shakan and the cascade style of kengai, you may want to try some more advanced bonsai styles for a better challenge.
Intermediate Bonsai artists may try some of the more common advanced styles such as the Bankan (Twisted), the Fukinagashi (Windswept), or the Bunjin (Literati). Here抯 a brief explanation of each.
Bankan (Twisted)
Thought to have originated in China, this style features trunks that are twisted and gnarled. Some expert artists can even form them Into animal shapes, the dragon being the most popular in Japan.
There are some styles to the Bankan which include the Nejikan with a trunk is only partially turned. Another style, the Takzukuri, is also called the octopus and in this style the trunk is quite twisted with the branches following it in the shape of a vortex. This style emulates the natural wind which shapes the full-size species of the tree.
Fukinagashi (Windswept)
This style is an attempt to emulate nature抯 effects on the tree but in miniature.
In the Fukinagashi style, the trunk is slanted as if it has been blown by a strong wind coming from one direction. The branches follow suit in that direction as a result of the bent growth.
This can be seen in areas near a class or a hill such as coastal regions. In these areas Fukinagashi is formed by nature.
of course, the bonsai artist cannot emulate a forceful wind and must use different means to cause the plant to grow in one direction. One could use wire, although this is most often used for the branches, and use a cord tied to a stake to force the tree to grow in the direction you want.
Oftentimes, the bonsai artist who makes sure the foliage is sparse to emulate the natural conditions where leaves would抳e been blown away by the strong winds.
Bunjin (Literati)
This is one of the most popular bonsai styles and no it is simple, it is deceptively difficult. The style consists of a thin trunk with very few branches and is inspired by Chinese paintings that show trees growing in a harsh climate. While this might sound sparse it produces rather dramatic results.
The trunk has frequent twists and branches come out at sharp upward angles giving the tree a different view from every angle. A popular species for the Bunjin style is the Japanese red Pine but it can be done using many other types of trees.
these advanced styles require a lot of skill and patience so they would be quite frustrating for the novice bonsai artists. However, once you are bored with the basics you might want to try your hand at these styles which will reward your skill and patience with beauty.

The Many Uses of Fresh Flowers
People use flowers for a variety of reasons. Flowers make beautiful decorations and add an inviting scent to a room. They also create a focal point for a drab entranceway or make an attractive centerpiece at a holiday dinner table.
Flowers also have many other uses. Some people use them for cooking while others dry them and use them for potpourri. Some may even use them to make wine!
Flowers can easily be dried for uses such as potpourri. To dry flowers, simply hang them upside down to dry so they do not lose their shape. If you do not hang them upside down, you run the risk of the petals falling off or the flowers wilting into a little ball. This is especially true of roses and carnations.
If you do not have flowers growing in your garden, you can stop by any florist and pick some up. If you want to make an arrangement yourself or dry them, you can usually get them cheaper. Florists tend to charge extra for arranging flowers.
Many larger retailers also offer Fresh Flowers near the registers. Some may also have an entire cooler section used for floral arrangements. Keep in mind that the flowers offered by the larger retailers may not be of the same quality of those offered by your florist. You will save more money but the flowers won’t be as fragrant and may not last as long.
If you want to find even more uses for flowers, do a quick search online. You may be surprised at the things people can do with them!

Garden Planning
When you want a perfect garden, have a lovely tree, plant perennial flowers, and / or have other gardening concerns about how to best prepare your garden, you should certainly know how to plan your garden. Find out how to do this, a method that guarantees your garden will best suit your needs as far as design, beauty, and / or harvest is concerned. There are many recommendations and tips that will make your gardening easier in general, your blooms or your landscaping more beautiful, and / or your garden (no matter what kind) the most efficient garden it can be.
If you are planning a vegetable garden, winter time is a good time to start planning. Design a garden, depending on how in-depth your project, you may want to start with a pencil and a sheet of graph paper. You will want to be sure to make the proper measurements of how deep to burry your seeds, what kinds of conditions different plants require, and how much space and quality soil you have to work with. Depending on the varieties of vegetables you choose, you can create the perfect conditions for a vegetable garden that will produce more vegetables and / or healthier garden vegetables for you.
Your planting space is very important. When it comes to gardening, always remember this phrase 搕he right plant in the right place?and you will have the most successful possible for your specific environmental conditions. The phrase above is practically a gardening mantra for the experienced gardener. Consider variables such as leaf cover (in other words: trees or other shade-providing foliage, as well as buildings or structures such as fences or shelters, for the same reason. Light is virtually always the most important factor to consider when you decide what to plant. The atmospheric conditions are also very important variables to consider: conditions such as humidity and temperature. Your particular plant will thrive in certain conditions with certain amounts of sunlight per day. Therefore, if you have a tall storage shelter right next to or nearby your shrubs, and your shrubs need direct sunlight for at least three hours a day, you do not have to worry as long as they receive the minimum amount of sunlight.
If your favorite flowers prefer a more humid climate than you have in the environment in which you live, you may want to plant them near a waterfall, garden pond or fountain. As a matter of fact, there is a simpler solution for you if you do not have a garden pond, reflecting pool or waterfall, all you need to do is to mist the plant and / or its flowers to keep it moist. This is true for maintaining a plant in less than perfect conditions, requiring additional moisture, virtually every time.
Because of the increase in modern technology, there are even pieces of gardening / landscaping equipment available to help you easily ascertain the conditions of your garden space. You will know almost exactly what you will need to create the perfect garden in the conditions or under which you live or that you can create so your garden can thrive. These aforementioned pieces of gardening equipment are sometimes very important if you need the extra help.
Creating the conditions you need is essential for your ultimate success for your gardening and / or landscaping overall. Here is an example of one such plant many people love to have in their yards and gardens: The Bradford flowering pear tree.
The new flowering pear tree (Pyrus calleryana) is a great tree, beautiful and fragrant, is a very typical tree to see lining the urban streets creating a little ally of surrounding comfort. If the pyrus calleryana is something you care for in your own yard, know that it is a small ?space flowering tree. The tree is also, unfortunately, likely to be deformed and perhaps hazardous for you because it is narrow and grows more upright than other trees, and is therefore less likely to survive a storm. In conditions where heavy storms are very common, you are likely not to see any flowering pear trees thriving in delicate stream-like trails.
There are, of course, many other examples of both flowering plants as well as others that may be perfect for you gardening and / or landscaping needs. Explore your favorite plants and flowers, and discover the environmental condition they prefer, then design the perfect gardening or landscaping project. You can impress even yourself when your garden is set in the very best conditions for each and every plant to thrive.

Little Gardeners
Ever since our daughter was old enough to walk, she loved helping us garden. We’d give her pint-sized gardening tools and a spot to dig in and she couldn’t be happier. It didn’t take long before we created a vegetable patch just for her. I would take her to the nursery where she could pick out what she wanted to plant. We didn’t always plant from seed because sometimes it just took too long for her to see results, so we’d often pick some plants that were already on their way.
Everyday we’d go out to the garden to see what was new and there was always something to water or pick. My favourite kid-friendly veggie is the cherry tomato because they are great to just pick off and eat, and there is always a new one ripening so it’s a great learning experience and adventure.
Last year we planted strawberries and both kids had a great time watching them grow and then tasting what a fresh berry tasted like. My two-year old found it difficult to be patient so he ate most of the berries before they even remotely resembled a strawberry frustrating his sister who probably only managed to salvage one or two ripe ones the entire season.
This year, we’re trying to come up with a few new ideas for our every-expanding veggie patch. Just by adding or changing our garden line-up each summer, our kids learn so much about how things grow, the importance of being good to the earth, and best of all, how great things taste when you can pick them and eat them from your very own garden.
My kids are also learning where fruits and vegetables come from and they now ask questions about the origins of a new fruit or veggie when we are at the grocery store, or serving it at dinner, which I love. In our fast-paced world, I can’t think of a better and more enjoyable lesson to teach than where our food comes from, and I don’t mean the local grocery store.

Herbs Have More Uses Than Dinner
While cooking is the primary reason gardeners set aside a special place for herbs, there are other benefits to growing them.
Sweet herbs can also be grown to serve a pleasing and aesthetic purpose. Many herbs may be used for decoration. A bouquet of the pale pink blossoms of thyme and the delicate flowers of marjoram, the fragrant sprigs of lemon balm mixed with the bright yellow umbels of sweet fennel, the finely divided leaves of rue and the long glassy ones of bergamot, is not only novel in appearance but in scent. In sweetness it excels even sweet peas and roses. Mixed with the brilliant red berries of barberry and multiflora rose, and the dark-green branches of hardy thyme, which continues fresh and sweet through the year, a handsome and lasting bouquet may be made for a midwinter table decoration, a fragrant reminder of Shakespeare’s lines in “A Winter’s Tale”:
“Here’s flowers for you;
Hot lavender, mints, savory, marjoram;
The marigold, that goes to bed wi’ the sun
And with him rises weeping.”
The rare aroma of sweet marjoram reminds many people of their grandmother’s country garden. So much so that countless muslin bags of dried marjoram leaves intended to be used for stuffing poultry never reach the kitchen. They are placed in the sunlight of a bay window where Old Sol coaxes forth their imprisoned odors and perfumes the air with childhood memories of summers in the country.
Other memories cling to the delicate little lavender. Most people have at least one lavender sachet in a dresser drawer, linen closet or hope chest. Would any country wedding be complete without little silk bags filled with dried lavender buds and blooms? They certainly add the finishing touch of romance to the dainty trousseau of linen and lace.
Scent can affect mood, memory, and sense of well-being. Add some herbs to your home so your kids and grandkids will have a special scent associated with you, something that when they smell it will trigger fond memories of their childhood.

Sundials – Consider Buying a Sundial
Have you considered a sundial as a feature in your garden?
Long before the age of clocks, our ancestors needed to consider the time. Time was important in travel, how far you had gone in a certain time mattered, particularly if you had to get back home before sundown. And therein lay the answer to the problem – the Sun. As it carved its path across the sky, it cast a shadow, and as the sun moved, so did the shadow. Could this movement be measured? And could it be divided into periods of time.
To our ancestors, time as we know it today wasn’t quite so “necessary” Darkness, daylight, and the amount of time in between each would have been enough. Rudimentary marks between when the Sun first cast a shadow and when the sun went down could have be divided into time elements, hardly today’s hours and minutes, but important none the less.
Today, sundials are far more sophisticated in their design, creating a fine feature within a garden, but they still use the basic principles of sun movement measurement, albeit in tune with today’s time measurements. They still feature the Gnomon, the shadow stick which provides the shadow position to tell the time. The Gnomon has developed from a basic stick, to an ornamental angled feature, which not only looks nicer, but provides for better accuracy.
Over time, the sundial features have changed from a very basic flat plate design, to a complex and very accurately marked timepiece, the plate can often be rotated with the seasons. Often Sundials will now include Zodiac signs, sunrise and sunset marks, and also compass directions.
As an ornamental feature or a fully functional measurer of time, sundials are more fun than a watch or a clock, and at one with mother Earth.
Never needs winding, never breaks down and allows you to track the ever changing seasons

Everything About Outdoor Plant Containers
Are you a gardening enthusiast? Most likely the answer is yes, gardening is an art that needs a lot of practice to achieve perfection. If you want to make the most of the small patch of land in front of your home then you will need to utilize the best gardening tools in the market. With the advancement of technology the gardening tools are getting an overhaul, and the outdoor plant containers have also undergone a facelift.
The outdoor plant containers are the best way to keep your garden completely organized and clutter free. Most of the amateur gardeners have a hard time trying to categorize their flowering plants properly and having these pots can really make a huge difference. There are different types of plant pots that a person can choose from. The plant containers come in various shapes and sizes that will surely fit your entire requirement perfectly.
The materials of these urns play a very important role in deciding the aesthetics of your garden. No matter how small your garden is, a good set of boxes can give a nice look to it and win accolades from your neighbors. Make sure you get your facts straight before going on a shopping spree to acquire new ones, as each plant requires different types of pots.
The terracotta plant pots are great way to keep your environment clean and pollution free at all times. The biggest advantage is that they are organic and allow the plant roots to gather nutrients from the surroundings. The terracotta pots are not without their fair share of flaws as well; they break very easily and are not suitable for big plants.
If you want to give your garden a more natural look, you can dig a hole and bury the plant containers inside. The metal containers are another great addition to your garden and they can really improve the aesthetics of your garden to a great extent.
When you are using outdoor plant containers you should pay special attention to watering your plants at regular intervals. It is very easy to conduct research on the Internet and there are a number of websites that will really help you understand which plant grows best with certain types of pots. If you are still undecided, it will be a good idea to head off to the nearest gardening store and ask the shop keeper for some advice.
